*単語の破棄は美しいものだよ。もちろん動詞や形容詞には多いに無駄がある。しかし同じように取り除くことができる名詞が数百もあるんだ。同義語だけじゃない。反義語もそうだ。結局のところ単に他の単語の反対なのにどんな存在意義がそれにあるっていうんだ？単語はその反対の意味も自身に含んでるのさ。例えば『良い』を考えてみよう。『良い』のような単語があるのに『悪い』という単語が存在する必要があるだろうか？『非良い』で十分事足りるだろう・・・いや改善されてるよ。正に反対になっているからね。もう一方はそうなってはいない。あるいは『良い』を強調したいとしよう。『素晴らしい』だの『見事』だの不便であいまいな言葉の存在意義はなんだ？『プラスグッド』で十分だ。もしさらに強調したければ『ダブルプラスグッド』でいい。もちろんこういった形式を我々は既に使っている。だがニュースピークの最終版ではこういったもの以外は存在しなくなるんだ。つまるところ善と悪の全概念はたった六つの単語で表される・・・実際にはたった一つの単語だ。美しいと思わないかね、ウィンストン？
: It's a beautiful thing, the destruction of words. Of course the great wastage is in the verbs and adjectives, but there are hundreds of nouns that can be got rid of as well. It isn’t only the synonyms; there are also the antonyms. After all, what justification is there for a word which is simply the opposite of some other word? A word contains its opposite in itself. Take “good,” for instance. If you have a word like “good,” what need is there for a word like “bad?” “Ungood” will do just as well — better, because it’s an exact opposite, which the other is not. Or again, if you want a stronger version of “good,” what sense is there in having a whole string of vague useless words like “excellent” and “splendid” and all the rest of them? “Plusgood” covers the meaning, or “doubleplusgood” if you want something stronger still. Of course we use those forms already.
